In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the national Cooperative Extension System in Pennsylvania.
May 8, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, which officially created federal funding for the national Cooperative Extension System. The Smith-Lever Act created a partnership between the United States Department of Agriculture and the nation’s land-grant universities that extended outreach programs to rural Americans. The Cooperative Extension System provides individuals living in rural communities with access to educational programs, information on advances in agricultural practices, as well as the latest technologies. The Cooperative Extension System has been credited with increasing the United States’ agricultural productivity since the 20th century.
The Cooperative Extension System continues to serve a vital role in agricultural research, primarily through agricultural experiment stations, and academic classes provided at 106 colleges and universities located throughout the United States. Community-based programs offered through the Cooperative Extension System serve individuals living in both rural and urban communities through a state-by-state network that provides educational and developmental services such as the nationwide youth 4-H program, food and nutrition programs, and disaster response education programs.
Millions of youth, adults, families, farmers, ranchers, community leaders, and others engage in Cooperative Extension System learning opportunities designed to extend knowledge and change lives. The Cooperative Extension System provides a practical approach to connecting educators with the public through community-based and online resources, further enabling people to make healthy life decisions while encouraging further research and development of agricultural issues, ensuring that the United States continues to produce a safe and abundant food supply for future generations.
