Memo
Dear Colleagues –

When we return in January, I intend to re-introduce legislation that will prohibit school board members from voting on union contracts that increase the salary of a family member living in their own household.

Current law allows for a school director to vote on contracts negotiated with a local education association (union) if the school director’s spouse is teacher within the school district.  In practice, a school director can vote to hike his own household’s take-home pay.  Such a circumstance recently occurred in my district, where a new contract was approved by a 5-4 margin, with one of the affirmative votes coming from a school director with a spouse employed by the school district who was covered under the contract.

As many contracts include clauses that increase compensation or benefits for affected employees, in my view this situation presents a clear conflict of interest.  A school director should not have the ability to vote to hike the salary of members of his or her own household.  My proposal would require an abstention from voting in this circumstance.

I would appreciate your support of this initiative.
