Inmate Accounts_ Prohibiting Public Funds

Representative Cris Dush
R House District 66
Memo
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will prohibit gift cards/certificates as well as electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, administered by the Department of Human Services for public assistance, to be used towards alcohol purchases and/or deposited into inmate accounts.
This legislation would also prohibit the Department of Corrections from allowing public assistance withdraws or transfers from occurring on the facilities premises.
It is important that public assistance is used to provide necessities, such as food and shelter to those who need them most, such as feeding hungry children. That’s why I’m prohibiting the use of these funds to inmate accounts, for purchases and amenities, and things like cigarettes.
I trust that you will agree that this issue must be addressed and my bill will render your support, by adding your name as a cosponsor to this legislation. Thank you.
