In the near future I will be introducing legislation to amend the Medical Practice Act (Act 112 of 1985) to establish licensing requirements for recreational therapists.
Recreational therapists plan, direct and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for people with disabilities, injuries or illnesses. Recreational therapists use a variety of modalities, including arts and crafts, drama, music, dance, sports and games, to help maintain or improve a patient’s physical, social and emotional well-being. My legislation would require an individual to obtain a license from the State Board of Medicine in order to use the title “recreational therapist” or to practice recreational therapy in Pennsylvania.
By providing licensing for credentialed recreational therapists practicing in the state we can ensure these individuals have met the standards of education and experience necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of our citizens.
