Memo
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would provide for specific variances and duties of the Board of Cosmetology.
My legislation would require that a licensed salon owner who moves, vacates, or transfers a license, resubmit all variance requests to the Board. Previously awarded variances would be prohibited.
Under my legislation, the Board would be required to publish their meeting agenda on their website 30 days prior to a meeting. It would include a detailed description of each agenda item. In addition, my legislation would add a new section to the law establishing guidelines for specific variances. The Board not their designees, would be required to take action on all variance requests- prohibiting staff from granting or denying variance requests without Board action. They would be required to include explanations of all variances requested.
Finally, the legislation would prohibit variances for new construction, additions, or renovations, unless the requestor can demonstrate an extenuating need. The Board would not be permitted to grant variances that allow for a shared lavatory or any shared space with another salon or business.
The Cosmetology Law promotes the public health and safety of consumers. My legislation puts safety measures in place, by prohibiting certain variances.
I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation.
