Real Estate Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans

Memo
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation of importance to Pennsylvania
disabled veterans. The bill will amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to expand the current
property tax exemption for disabled veterans. Current law provides that, disabled veterans in
Pennsylvania who are considered to have a 100% disability rating are eligible for the exemption.
My proposal will amend Article VIII, Section 2 (c) of the Pennsylvania State
Constitution. My legislation will lower the requirement of a 100% disability rating to a rating of
70%. This means that in order for a disabled veteran to be eligible for the property tax
exemption, they must be found to have a disability rating of at least 70% by the Veterans Affairs
Administration.
This bill will allow for more disabled veterans to obtain a property tax exemption in the
Commonwealth. After serving our nation, disabled veterans should never be in risk of losing
their home due to an inability to pay their property taxes. Allowing more veterans with
disabilities to use this tax exemption is another way of paying the veterans back for their great
sacrifice to this Commonwealth and our country.
By their service, I feel that veterans who are dealing with disabilities have earned this benefit,
and I encourage you to join me in co-sponsoring this piece of legislation.
