Representative Stephen Barrar
R House District 160
Memo
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to permit consumers to place a permanent freeze on their credit report. This bill was previously introduced as HB 1184 (2015-2016.) This legislation is vital in our continued efforts to provide identity theft protection to consumers across the Commonwealth.
We live in a society that heavily relies on technology to accomplish most everyday tasks. While technological advancements such as the internet and smart phones have simplified most tasks, safeguards are needed to protect against the transmission of sensitive information from one party to another. With this in mind, my legislation will allow an individual consumer to place a permanent freeze on their consumer report so that the report may only be viewed by credit reporting agencies, fraud prevention agencies and law enforcement agencies.
Stopping identity theft is a task that we should not take lightly and strengthening our consumer protection laws is a task that is always a priority of the General Assembly. I am confident that my legislation provides much needed safeguards and will strengthen the Commonwealth’s consumer protection laws.
