Co-Sponsorship Memo Details

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would amend the Unemployment Compensation (UC) Law to allow for reasonable accommodations to be made for individuals with a disability who are required to take the reemployment class.
 
Under the UC Law, some claimants are required to take a reemployment class. These classes are designed to identify claimants who are most likely to exhaust UC benefits, and who may need job assistance to expedite their reemployment.  For example, I have a constituent who is autistic and able to perform certain tasks.  He enjoys working and his minimal salary is a sense of self-pride.  However, when there is an interim between jobs, in order to be eligible to receive unemployment, he is required to participate in the PREP Program and take classes that are beyond his capacity.  I believe these requirements are unrealistic and unacceptable.  This legislation would address these situations.
 
There is currently no provision in the UC Law that would allow individuals with a disability who are required to take these classes the opportunity to request reasonable accommodations to succeed in the class. This legislation will add this provision and allow for all individuals to benefit from the reemployment services in the UC program.
