Prices for groceries, gasoline, electricity and all essentials have increased over the last twenty years. Yet Pennsylvania’s tipped employees have not seen a raise in the minimum wage for tipped or gratuity based employees in that time. Our tipped employees are having to cover more wages with their tips and effectively earning less. It is time to help our tipped employees earn a fair wage so they can support themselves and their family and allow it to be adjusted to match economic conditions.
Because of this wage disparity, I am offering a House companion bill to Senate Bill 1045 sponsored by Senator Haywood. The legislation would raise the tipped minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2024. In addition, more increases could be triggered to ensure the tipped wage meets the standard minimum wage.
The legislation will also allow a municipality to require a minimum wage to be set above the state minimum.
Some of the hardest working people in our economy earn a tipped wage.
I ask for your support and to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation, so we can help Pennsylvania tipped employees earn a fair and living wage.
