Creating “Child with Autism” Specialty License Plates

Children with autism often experience communication issues and are at a heightened risk for sensory overload. Interactions with police officers can magnify these problems, particularly when they come during crises, which is why I plan to introduce legislation to provide police officers advanced notice for when they are approaching a vehicle with an autistic child.
As numerous organizations strive to offer law enforcement the necessary training for interacting with autistic children, we have a unique opportunity to provide support. My bill will create a new “Child with Autism” specialty license plate that parents and guardians of autistic children will have the opportunity to purchase. These plates will alert police officers and first responders that an autistic child may be on board the vehicle providing them advances notice to approach the vehicle with increased care.
Certainly, it is important that we protect privacy in these situations, particularly as the child approaches adulthood. For this reason, my legislation stipulates that these new license plates will become void thirty days after the child’s eighteenth birthday.
