The brave men and women who serve in our armed forces deserve recognition from a grateful nation for their sacrifice especially for those served our country during a period of war. Senator Pat Toomey, working with a Vietnam Veteran from York County, in 2017 introduced legislation to create a national day of recognition for the veterans of Vietnam. President Trump signed that bill into law and we have now celebrated two national days of recognition for those who served during Vietnam.
However, there are brave men and women who served our nation during conflict who still are not recognized by our nation. These heroes fought for our country during the First Gulf War, the Second Gulf War and still serve our country during Afghanistan the longest running conflict in our nation’s history.
In order to recognize these veterans, I plan to introduce legislation which would designate March 6th, the day President George H. W. Bush declared an end to combat operations as First Gulf War Veterans Day. The bill would also designate December 18th, the day combat troops pulled out Iraq, as the Second Gulf War Veterans Day. Finally, the bill would designate October 7th, the day the U.S. forces began combat operations in Afghanistan, as Afghanistan War Veterans Day.
