Memo
Pennsylvania has a large elderly population and chances are one of our loved ones will end up in a nursing home at some point. Unfortunately, nursing homes are often under staffed, potentially leading to unnecessary and avoidable injuries. The time has come to increase staffing ratios in Pennsylvanians nursing homes.
In order to better protect one of our most vulnerable populations, I will introduce a bill that will increase the minimum required daily hours of direct resident care from 2.7 to 3.5. Evidence suggests that an increase in direct care hours can prevent falls, pressure sores, and other aliments commonly present in nursing homes. Four other states (California, Illinois, New York, Florida) and the District of Columbia have increased the number of direct care hours; it’s time for the Commonwealth to do the same.
Please co-sponsor this legislation that will benefit older Pennsylvanians.
