Memo
I am planning to reintroduce legislation that will require 80% of teachers working in a charter school or cyber charter school to hold state certification.

In passing the Charter School Law in 1997, the General Assembly intended to create schools that would be required to meet state academic standards, but would also have flexibility to operate independently from the legal and regulatory framework applicable to traditional public schools. To this end, the Charter School Law currently requires only 75% of the professional staff members employed by a charter school or cyber charter school to hold state certification.

I believe that requiring a higher percentage of charter and cyber charter school professional staff to hold state certification will help ensure that students attending such schools receive a quality education. Therefore, my bill will require that 80% of teachers working in a charter school or cyber charter school hold state certification.
