If Judah Samet hadn’t stopped to have a quick conversation on October 27, 2018, he would have been inside of the Tree of Life Synagogue with his friends and fellow worshippers when 11 of them were gunned down and more were wounded in a hate-driven attack. Instead, he was forced to watch helplessly from the parking lot. “It never ends,’ Mr. Samet told a reporter of his thoughts that day.
As a holocaust survivor, Mr. Samet felt a grim sense of familiarity. He saw hatred in action has a young boy in Hungary, and he saw it again as an 80 year old man in the Tree of Life parking lot in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
It is for Mr. Samet, and all of those who were killed, wounded and emotionally scarred by the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue that we plan to introduce a resolution proclaiming April 10, 2019, as “Stronger Than Hate Day.”
We wish to commemorate not only the victims of the senseless attack, but also the communities of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh and beyond, where people pulled together and surrounded those who were harmed with an outpouring of love and support.
Today, attacks against Jews are on the rise again world-wide, and the Tree of Life attack was the most deadly anti-Semitic attack ever to take place on American soil. As Americans, we must fight this trend by ensuring that the horrors of the past are never forgotten, and thus never repeated.
By joining together in the passage of this joint resolution, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the Pennsylvania Senate can send a message that our Commonwealth is “Stronger than Hate.”
Please join Senator Costa and me in co-sponsoring this unprecedented action.
