Memo
While we have made progress in reducing the number of overdose deaths in Pennsylvania, this public health crisis is far from over. We must continue to implement commonsense solutions that will prevent future overdoses and instances of opioid addiction. That is why I will be introducing legislation requiring the State Board of Pharmacy to issue regulations requiring warning labels be added to opioid prescription bottles.
The addition of warning labels will ensure patients and their families across the Commonwealth are advised of the risks associated with prescription opioids every time they are used. In the United States, warning labels are already required on products, such as cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in order to inform the public about the health hazards that may result from their consumption or abuse. These labels have been shown to be an effective, low-cost method for communicating the product’s associated health risks. Warning labels on opioids would serve as a consistent reminder of the potential dangers of abusing prescription medication.
