In the near future I plan to introduce a bill to add additional requirements for district attorney experience in first class, second class A, or third class counties.
In particular, the bill will add an additional requirement in those counties for a DA to have five years of prosecutorial experience prior to being a candidate for the role.
Currently, a DA is required to have been practicing as an attorney for one year, be at least 25 years old, a resident of the county for one year, and a citizen of the United States.
By adding requirements regarding experience as a prosecutor, we will ensure that candidates have experience in prosecuting crimes, which I feel is a necessary for them to step into such an important role, especially in our more heavily populated counties.
The bill will restrict the new prosecutorial experience requirement to counties first through third, as those counties would also likely have the depth of candidates to choose from that will meet the requirements.
This bill is a part of a series of bills I have introduced regarding District Attorney experience and requirements.
