At the beginning of the upcoming session I plan to introduce legislation to repeal the no excuse absentee mail-in voting provisions contained in Act 77 of 2019. When the legislature planned to implement mail-in voting, no one could have imagined the gross overstepping of the current administration. The way that the mail-in ballot process was operated is absolutely not the way this body intended for it to be. This past Presidential Election cycle we witnessed an extreme amount of irregularities regarding mail-in ballots. I, as many members of this body have also, spoken to countless constituents who unknowingly received mail-in ballots. Our offices have been inundated by phone calls and emails regarding constituent issues with mail in ballots in the last few weeks. The Pennsylvania State Supreme Court has rewritten the provisions of Act 77 in a manner that makes them inconsistent and unworkable. In repealing the no excuse absentee ballots, we would not remove provisions previously in place for military absentee ballots, out of town absentee ballots, or sick/elderly absentee ballots. As representatives of the people of this Commonwealth we must listen to the concerns of our constituents and act swiftly to make certain that future elections are safe, secure, and held with the utmost integrity.
