In June 2019, six people were shot and one was killed in a shooting at a graduation party in a park in Philadelphia. Additionally, in November 2018, a man was shot and killed in a municipal building in Monroe County, PA. In an average year, 1,544 people die by guns in Pennsylvania, with the rate of gun deaths in the state increasing 20% from 2009 to 2018. We must not sit idly by as Pennsylvanians are at risk of gun violence in public buildings and parks throughout the state.
That is why I plan on introducing legislation that would allow political subdivisions to regulate the possession and transportation of firearms when carried or transported on public grounds, including but not limited to: buildings, parks, and conveyances or vehicles. The bill will not only keep our constituents safe, but will also provide peace of mind for government employees working in these buildings and parks, and driving government vehicles.
