Increasingly, we hear reports of data breaches and compromised cybersecurity, putting the personal information of consumers at risk of exposure to hackers and other bad actors.  Pennsylvanians deserve to know their private information is secure and have a right to know if a breach of their medical or biometric information has occurred.  While protections are in place to secure certain personal and financial data, current Commonwealth protections do not extend to personal biometric and medical information.  As online services and databases become more ubiquitous, keeping personal information secure is more crucial than ever.
 
My legislation will amend the Breach of Personal Information Act to include biometric and medical information under the definition of “personal information.”   This will ensure the citizens of the Commonwealth are notified of the possibility their biometric or medical information has been compromised in a data breach.
 
In the wrong hands, an individual’s personal information may leave them susceptible to a host of scams and costly misuse.  I hope you will join me in extending additional consumer protections to Pennsylvanians, ensuring their personal privacy is maintained.
