Memo
Every year, more than 1,500 Pennsylvanians are killed with guns, and over 3,000 more wounded, costing the state around $12 billion. While we currently require background checks for all handgun purchases, we have continuously failed to implement these commonsense checks for individuals purchasing other firearms, such as rifles, privately or via gun shows. This creates a dangerous loophole, allowing individuals wishing to do harm to others the chance to purchase a deadly weapon.

My bill would address this dangerous issue by requiring background checks for all firearms, regardless of barrel length. This simple, but effective, change will ensure that the sale or transfer of any firearm is kept safe and legal, regardless of if the firearm was purchased through a licensed retail seller, via private transaction, or at a gun show.

The statistics are clear: comprehensive background checks protect lives without depriving lawful firearm owners of their Second Amendment rights. For the safety of our constituents and their loved ones, please join me in supporting this commonsense piece of firearm legislation.
