Ensuring Free Speech in Higher Education

Memo
In the near future I plan to introduce legislation that will ensure that the fundamental right to free speech is especially safeguarded in our institutions of higher learning.
My legislation will prohibit public institutions of higher education from utilizing so-called “bias response teams.” Bias response teams enable the anonymous reporting of otherwise protected free speech and threaten to chill such speech as a result. This legislation will also prohibit public institutions of higher education from assessing unreasonably high security fees for guest speakers on campus and creates a private cause-of-action for those aggrieved by a violation of its provisions.
Our colleges and schools should be areas of free thought and free speech, not a vacuum that favors one point of view and stifles critical thinking, debate, and a healthy expression of divergent ideas.
Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation aimed at protecting the right to free speech.
