American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month
In the near future, we will introduce a resolution designating March as “American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to recognize the culture and accomplishments of Muslim Americans in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is home to a robust Muslim-American community. From Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and everywhere in between, Muslim Pennsylvanians contribute to the cultural and civic fabric of our Commonwealth. Pew Research Center estimates that nearly 4 million Muslims live in the United States, and that number is projected to grow. American Muslim presence in the United States dates to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and since then, Muslim Americans have been at the forefront of our cultural, civic, academic, economic, and scientific progress. Today, the Pennsylvania Muslim demographic reflects the long-standing African American Muslim community as well as immigrant and native-born American Muslims.
At the same time, Muslim-American Pennsylvanians experience the effects of anti-Muslim bigotry and racism, exhibited by multiple anti-mosque incidents recorded across the Commonwealth. The collective, multi-faith solidarity against such instances is a testament to the bonds that unite our Commonwealth.
In 2023, March signifies the beginning of Ramadan, Islam’s holiest month, where Muslims worldwide practice spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and community solidarity. Furthermore, March 15th has been designated as International Day to Combat Islamophobia by the United Nations.
This resolution will help communities across Pennsylvania to promote awareness and appreciation for Muslim American communities in Pennsylvania and help spearhead educational and civic programs, creating greater cross-communal literacy. In the past two years, states, including Illinois, California, and New Jersey, took similar steps to recognize their Muslim American communities.
