Automated enforcement programs in our state increase safety for motorists, pedestrians, maintenance workers, and even school children. Statistics show the success of such programs, including speed cameras in active work zones and along Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia. Some of these programs are facing expiration dates, while others require improvements to increase efficiency and safety. We need to act now to ensure that these programs continue uninterrupted.

To address this issue, I will be introducing a bill to make numerous changes to our automated enforcement programs. My bill will eliminate the February 2024 expiration date for the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program and the December 2023 expiration date for the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program on Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia. It will also expand the ASE program to all roads in Philadelphia, contingent on PennDOT’s approval and the city’s adoption of a local ordinance, and make necessary improvements to both the AWZSE and ASE programs.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, my bill will increase the safety of our school-age children by making necessary fixes to current law authorizing school districts to use automated school bus stop-arm cameras and establishing a five-year pilot program for speed cameras in active school zones in Philadelphia.
