Memo
Democracy works best when people participate. Sadly, in our state, many critical voices go unheard. One barrier that hampers participation is the current voter registration process. People are busy with their day-to-day lives—working, raising kids, and attending school. Registering to vote is rarely at the top of mind, which is why we should make it easier and more accessible.

For this reason, I am introducing automatic voter registration legislation previously sponsored by Representative Sara Innamorato. Under the bill, people automatically would be registered to vote when they interact with any government entity unless they opt out. Evidence shows that automatic voter registration saves money, increases the accuracy of voter rolls, and boosts voter participation. By instituting this practice, Pennsylvania would be joining 17 states—West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Virginia, Nevada, Vermont, Michigan, New Mexico, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington—that are amplifying their voters’ voices and supporting resource-limited election officials.

When more voices are heard, we make better decisions. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation and helping to ensure a healthy, vibrant democracy in Pennsylvania.
