Memo
In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution recognizing June as Italian-American Heritage Month.

Italian-Americans are the fourth-largest ethnic group in the United States and played an instrumental role in shaping the country, with innumerable contributions to science, the arts, and our popular culture. The recent 2020 census along with the 2021 American Community Survey reported about 1.7 million Pennsylvanians of Italian ancestry (or 13 percent of the statewide population). These Italian-Americans have contributed greatly to Pennsylvania with deep roots in religion, politics, the arts, science, law, and economic and social institutions.

The month of June has special significance to the Italian-American community. On June 2, Italians around the world celebrate Festa della Repubblica, or Republic Day, Italy’s national day commemorating their establishment of a republic after the 1946 referendum. Some of our most notable Italian-American organizations also have anniversaries of their founding in June. These observances have led the U.S. Congress and state and local governments to designate various weeks and days in June in honor of Italian-Americans and their heritage.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor the contributions of Italian-Americans to our Commonwealth and country, and celebrate their cultural heritage, by designating June 2024 as Italian-American Heritage Month in Pennsylvania.
