Memo
Our seniors are a cherished resource and, oftentimes, they’ve done so much to raise their families and given of their time in their local communities. We owe them a debt of gratitude. But we’ve seen, time and again, they can be vulnerable and taken advantage of by people they know and trust.

I am introducing legislation to protect senior citizens from being exploited by a designated power of attorney, which is often chosen by the senior themselves. Specifically, my bill broadens the definition of "exploitation" under the Older Adults Protective Services Act to include an individual acting under a power of attorney.

The bill also would provide that a local area agency on aging shall have the authority to investigate and access records if there is reasonable cause to believe that an individual acting under a power of attorney is exploiting the older person or their resources.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
