A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of April 2023 as "Alcohol Awareness Month"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Most adults in the United States who drink alcohol
do so moderately and without complications, yet alcohol-related
problems are among the most significant public health issues in
the country; and
WHEREAS, Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects about 15 million
adults in the United States; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Institutes of Health, an
estimated 140,000 people die from alcohol-related causes
annually, making alcohol the fourth leading preventable cause of
death in the nation; and
WHEREAS, Each April since 1987, the National Council on
Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc., has sponsored "Alcohol
Awareness Month" to increase public awareness and understanding,
reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on
alcohol use disorder and alcohol-related issues; and
WHEREAS, Adolescent drinking is a serious public health

problem in the United States; and
WHEREAS, According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use
and Health, an estimated 414,000 adolescents 12 to 17 years of
age had AUD; and
WHEREAS, According to the same study, nearly 7 million people
12 to 20 years of age reported drinking alcohol in the past
month and approximately 825,000 people 12 to 20 years of age
reported heavy alcohol use in the past month; and
WHEREAS, Alcohol use during the teenage years can interfere
with normal adolescent brain development, increase the risk of
developing AUD and lead to unintended consequences such as
injury, sexual assault, alcohol overdose and death; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2023
as "Alcohol Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate inform Pennsylvanians of the
dangers associated with alcohol use and abuse in adults and
children.
