Memo
I plan to re-introduce Senate Bill 136 from last session to amend the Public Official Compensation law so that a member of the General Assembly could elect to reject receipt of the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).  Notification would need to be provided in writing to the Chief Clerk in either chamber no later than ten days prior to the annual effective date of the adjustment. The election to reject the adjustment would be irrevocable during the member’s term of office.

This change would eliminate the need to return a COLA each month to Treasury or to donate it to charity if a member decides to decline the increase.

Sponsors of Senate Bill 136 were Senators Aument, Brewster, DiSanto, Folmer, Laughlin, Stefano and Vogel.

Thank you for your consideration.
