Memo
In the near future, Senator Tomlinson, Senator Yudichak and I intend to reintroduce legislation increasing the current fees and limitations on the compensation for Local Registrars.

Under current law, there is a $60,000 limitation on the compensation in any one calendar year. Once this cap is met, the local registrar must transfer all additional fees to the Department of Health which would deposit $3 to the Vital Statistics Improvement Fund and $3 to the General Fund. This proposal would increase the cap to $85,000.

Since 2005 the fee for a Death Certificate issued by a Local Registrar was $6 with Local Registrars keeping half ($3) of the fees collected.  Last year the charge for a Death Certificate was increased to $20.00, however; the fee retained by the Local Registrars was not increased.  Accordingly, we propose an increase in the amount a Local Registrar can retain from $3 to $6 to assist with increases in inflation and expenses.

Since many registrar positions have gone vacant, existing registrars are experiencing an additional work load and are not receiving any additional compensation for the hours they put in to keep up with increased requests.
