Soon, I plan to introduce a resolution declaring April 10 as National Sprint Car Day across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Whether it be the Western PA drivers battling the All-Star Circuit of Champions drivers or the PA Posse defending their turf against the World of Outlaws, Pennsylvania has a rich history in the world of sprint car racing. Boasting a multitude of National Sprint Car Hall of Fame drivers such as Mitch Smith, Lynn Paxton, Dick “Toby” Tobias, Kramer Williamson, Fred Rahmer, Lance Dewease, Stevie Smith, and Tim Shaffer among others; legendary car owners like Walt Dyer, Bob Weikert and Al Hamilton; even top mechanics Davey Brown Sr. and the soon-to-be-inducted Ralph Heintzelman have all played important roles in the sprint car scene of Pennsylvania.
For those who do not know what a sprint car is, it is an open wheel (no fenders) race car that must weigh at least 1,400 pounds. They can race with or without an aluminum wing on top of the roll cage for downforce. Sprint cars have methanol-powered, 900 horsepower-producing engines with a maximum allowance of 410 cubic inches: hence, the date of 4/10 being celebrated as National Sprint Car Day.
A 2020 report prepared for the Motorsports Council of Pennsylvania by Washington & Jefferson College found that the motorsports industry contributes nearly $2.5 billion dollars annually to Pennsylvania’s economy. Although the sprint car world makes up a portion of this amount, it is also the overall importance of Pennsylvania sprint car racing that has influenced not only motorsports in America, but the entire world.
