Soon, I plan to introduce legislation that will help more older Pennsylvanians receive relief through the Property Tax & Rent Rebate Program.
My proposal looks to increase the income limits and permanently extend the exemption of social security cost-of-living-adjustments (COLA) from an applicant’s definition of income.
Many older Pennsylvanians, living on fixed incomes, depend on the PTRR program to stay in their homes. In my district and across the Commonwealth, many applicants are denied eligibility because they exceed the income limits. Unfortunately, those receiving Social Security income are deemed ineligible because of cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) that leave applicants a few dollars over the income thresholds. By permanently excluding these COLA increases from the definition of “income”, under the PTRR program, worthy Seniors across Pennsylvania would become eligible for assistance, once again.
My bill will go further to increase the income limits, which have not been adjusted since 2008. l will raise the income limits for homeowners from $35,000 to $50,000, and for renters from $15,000 to $30,000, allowing more Pennsylvanians to qualify.
Last session, as SB1355, Senators FONTANA, COLLETT, PHILLIPS-HILL, BARTOLOTTA, BREWSTER, KANE, COSTA, TARTAGLIONE, STEFANO, MUTH and SCHWANK signed on as co-sponsors.
